March Reads

Well, I didn’t read much in March. I aim for at least 2 books a month. Things came up I guess. I also had a hard time getting through the one book I did read so I guess that slowed me down a bit. My goal is to read at least 3 books in April to make up for it. I definitely will have the time!

American Royals by Katharine McGee

2.5/5 Stars

I put a hold on this book last summer, and it finally came to me. It’s obviously a very popular book. I’ve been hearing about it for a while now. I was really looking forward to reading it.

It takes a look at an alternate reality in which America has a Royal Family. After the Revolutionary War, a crown was offered to George Washington, and hundreds of years later his family still reigns. Princess Beatrice is set to become the first Queen Regnant of the American throne.

The book follows her and her sister, Samantha, and their struggles for normalcy, as well as Samantha’s friend, Nina, and their brother’s ex-girlfriend, Daphne.

I love the concept of the book. I’m very interested in the British Royal Family, and I thought it was an interesting idea to see what that would look like in the USA.

I just didn’t think the book was that great in execution.

It was a lot longer of a book than I was expecting, clocking in at nearly 450 pages. I found it to be a bit too long. It was hard for me to get into at first. I feel like we could have gotten to the point a little bit earlier than we did. That’s probably the difficulty of having 4 narrators interwoven. Each character talks about their POV of each situation, which makes it a little drawn out for my tastes.

I also wish the characters were just a little older. Beatrice is 21, and Samantha, Nina, and Daphne are 17-18. I think if they were in their mid-to-late 20’s, it would all feel a bit more realistic to me? I have no issues reading books where the characters are in that age range! It just doesn’t feel like a good fit here.

Am I going to read the new book in the series coming out this summer? I mean, probably. I’d like to see where the story is going.
