The world may have come to a total stop, but the Netflix reality programming department has not. Too Hot To Handle was unleashed upon the world on April 17, and it was exactly what we all needed – a trashy tv show with heart featuring […]
I don’t usually hop on tv watching trends, but I couldn’t say no to Love is Blind. It encapsulates many of my television interests including a complicated game, relationships, and pure insanity.
If you somehow missed the hoopla about Love is Blind, here is the premise: a bunch of Atlanta singles live at a sound stage for a week while dating a bunch of people that everyone else is dating. Except, they can’t see them. That’s right. The couples are separated in pods and while they can have wonderful, deep conversations they cannot see their partner. Six couples (that we see) agree to get engaged AGAIN WITHOUT SEEING THEIR FIANCE. They then meet, go on a vacation to Mexico, and move in together all while anticipating their wedding only 4 weeks away.
Yes, it’s wild and insane and crazy. It’s a concept that leave people wondering ‘how the F would that even happen? These people are nuts!’ Which is absolutely true. I am a veteran of reality dating shows, and I feel like this concept isn’t even the wildest. For my money, Married at First Sight still holds that title.
In the end, spoiler alert, two of these couples actually do get legally married. On the reunion, it’s revealed that those two couples are still together. The show was filmed in 2018 so the couples have been together for over a year now.
I really enjoyed the show. It was an interesting concept, and I appreciate the way that Netflix dropped the episodes. I love being able to see how these couples can make their relationship work, or how and why it falls apart. I am always very interested in the social relationships on reality television, which is often why I gravitate towards dating shows. It was compelling to see how 6 very different couples navigate their new reality.
The one thing that I didn’t particularly love was that the breakup more or less had to take place at the alter. Sure, they didn’t HAVE to stay, but I don’t believe they weren’t encouraged to stay and decide at the wedding. It seems like a step to far to get everyone’s friends and families there and then have all of that go down.
I do believe that this is a process that can work. It’s hard to believe it from the outside, but in watching these shows over the years, when you’re doing nothing but thinking about your connection and romantic relationship it’s possible for a real relationship to form on the fast track.
If you haven’t seen Love is Blind yet, first of all, sorry for spoiling it. Secondly, definitely watch this. It’s a great thing to talk about with all of your friends, I promise.
We are in the throes of December, which means a very holiday/wintery version of What I’ve been watching this week!!
Elf is my all-time favourite movie. Sorry! That’s just the way it is!! In my heyday I would watch it 3 or 4 times a day for weeks. I don’t do interests lightly. I even decorated the lounge of my dorm in first year like the living room in the movie.
Anyway, as a fully-fledged adult with more responsibilities and a dedication to watching seasons of America’s Next Top Model from over a decade ago, I only watch it 1 or 2 times a year. We got our first watch in while wrapping Christmas presents (a task I despise!)
I really feel like this movie holds up. It still has the charm it did when it first came out. I love watching it!
Nailed It: Holiday Edition
I’ve watched a bit of Nailed It in the past and have always enjoyed it. I put on the holiday series on a whim, as I’ve been meaning to watch it.
What a joy this show is. It’s just pure joy. It’s so funny, light and earnest. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. I cannot wait to finish watching the rest of the series.
Ex on the Peak
After a couple of pretty bland seasons of Ex on the Beach, I wasn’t super hyped about Ex on the Peak, despite a pretty great cast. Three episodes in and I’m really enjoying it. Having the winter theme, they could play it off like it wasn’t an Ex on the Beach-type show. It’s a fun watch and has more charm than the last few seasons did.
Holiday Specials of British Panel Shows
I can’t stop won’t stop with British Panel shows. We just wanted a nice holiday twist. We found some Christmas episodes of Would I lie to you? and Pointless. The WILTY episodes are really fantastic. Seek them out!
The Challenge The newest season of The Challenge started a few weeks ago. This season we see the Americans face off against the Brits. I love seeing a team challenge, we haven’t seen one in ages. I don’t have high hopes that it will stay […]
Raptors vs Golden State Warriors Game 6 THE TORONTO RAPTORS ARE NBA CHAMPIONS!!! FOR THE FIRST TIME LARRY O’BRIEN TROPHY COMES NORTH OF THE BORDER!!!! The last 2 minutes of the game took 20 minutes but felt like 20 hours. But it was all worth […]
This was the week that I’ve finally gotten into the holiday spirit with my viewing habits.
A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding – This was a sequel to 2017’s much-beloved holiday movie A Christmas Prince where a journalist goes undercover as a tutor to get access to the Royals of Aldovia. Obviously in that one hi jinks ensue and the commoner and the price fall in ~love~. In this movie Amber, our future queen, struggles with losing her identity to fit in with palace protocol. I think you can tell by the title of this movie whether or not you are going to like it. And I knew I as going to like it. It’s obviously kitschy and a little lame, but honestly that’s what I look for in a movie. I enjoyed the heck out of this.
Four Christmases – This is one of my boyfriend’s favourite Christmas movies, so we watched it this weekend. I always forget how much I enjoy this movie and also Reese Witherspoon.
Elf – This is both my favourite Christmas movie, and my favourite movie of all time. It’s a holiday tradition to watch it at least 10 times before Christmas, so here’s to another 9 viewings.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Holi-slay Spectacular – Well, this was certainly an interesting piece of television, wasn’t it? I was really excited to see some of my favourite queens from
seasons Christmases past decked out in holiday attire. It was a really fun special to watch, and there were some really excellent looks going on – but it did feel a little disconnected and odd. If you looked away from the screen for one moment, you came back wondering if you were still watching the same show. But in all honestly, I will probably watch this again next year.
Top Chef Kentucky – I am very excited that one of my favourite shows is back! Top Chef Kentucky premiered this week, and it felt like being home. The cheftestants team up to make some dishes without knives before running in a race of sorts with dishes that represent their cooking. I love this show so much and I am very excited about this cast. I talk about the episode on the reality tv rhap up top chef podcast.
