What I’ve been watching this week – April 17

The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart So like, I was always probably going to watch this. But now I have nothing better to do than to watch LTYH. In an inexplicable move, The Bachelor created a show just for people that are looking for […]

My Favourite ‘Comfort’ Shows

My Favourite ‘Comfort’ Shows

We are living in a weird, uncertain time that leaves us grasping for any sense of joy and normalcy. One way to do that, in my humble opinion, is to sit down with a few of your favourite comfort shows (also go for a walk […]

2019 Favourites

2019 Favourites

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

This was a really interesting read. It had a really different style than I was used to. My Sister, the Serial Killer had short chapters and it was a really quick read, but it was gripping right from the beginning. I finished it in a few hours because I just could not put it down. It had a few interesting twists, and I loved the style of the book. There’s a reason this was one of the most talked about books of 2019.

Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J Ryan Stradal

I think this was my absolute favourite book I read in 2019. The whole book followed the life of Eva Thorvald’s life. Every chapter is from someone different in her life’s perspective. It was heart-warming and breaking. I loved the story.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

I’m a little late to the game on this one, I know. This was a nice little vacation read. It was definitely dark and twisted, and the ending wasn’t THAT surprising. It was still a page-turner regardless. I tried to watch the show, and that’s just not for me!!

Buttermilk Graffiti by Edward Lee

As a Top Chef fan, I was really excited to find a book by former Top Chef contestant, Edward Lee. It is a really cool book about Edward visiting various communities in America where immigrants have had a big impact on the cultural and food scenes. I learned a lot from reading it and there were some recipes inspired by the communities in the book.

Katie Fforde Novels

I’ve been looking for another author that does it for me in the way that Sophie Kinsella does. I believe I have with Katie Fforde. Sure, you know where a lot of her stories are going right from the beginning, but that’s fine with me. She creates some really nice stories, and I have really enjoyed reading her books this year.

Taskmaster was on my 2018 Favourites too. It deserves a place in this favourites list as well because it is just so good. It makes me laugh so, so hard. Series 8 and 9 which came out this year were two of the best seasons. Every episode is amazing. You can watch episodes on YouTube here.

Vanderpump Rules

I put this on as something to watch. I didn’t really think I would like it that much, since I usually prefer my reality shows to have a bit of a competition element to them. I was wrong and I loved it. I motored through all of the seasons in a matter of weeks, and I can’t wait for the new season to come out!

Schitt’s Creek

This was on my list of ‘Things to Watch in 2019‘ ( I tried my best, okay?) and I’m mad at myself for waiting for long. It is so, so unbelievably funny. And in its later seasons it’s developed this beautiful warmth that has gone hand-in-hand perfectly with the comedy of it.

Richard Osman’s House of Games

This is one of my more recent discoveries. I’ve had a great time watching this show. It’s a fun twist on your usual trivia shows. It features people from all walks of British celebrity.

Alamar Beauty Blush Trio

I resubscribed to Boxycharm for this palette specifically, and it did not let me down. I received the Reina del Caribe V1 palette and Ojitos Brush Trio in Boxycharms as well and I’ve been very impressed with all of their products. The products are not crazy expensive in comparison to other brands. I love this blush palette, it was perfect for spring and summer. There’s a sale on a bundle right now including all three products I mentioned plus a lipgloss that you can find here.

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Beetroot

I own a lot of lipsticks, but this one really stands out to me for both formula and colour. It leans purple, but it’s not unwearable. I love the Amuse Bouche formula. It’s creamy, but pigmented. Here are all of the BITE products I’ve tried.

Hayu quickly became my favourite streaming service of 2019. I spent a lot of hours watching shows on Hayu. My Vanderpump Rules and Top Chef watches couldn’t have happened without it! It’s also pretty reasonably priced at $5.99 a month.

Bon Appetit Videos

The Bon Appetit Test Kitchen videos took the internet by storm this year. Who doesn’t love charming people talking about and making food? I know I do. Obviously Claire Saffitz’s ‘Gourmet Makes’ series is my favourite.

Who? Weekly

A friend introduced to me Who? Weekly very early on into 2019. It quickly became one of my favourite podcasts. I never miss an episode (and there’s 2 a week!). If you love pop culture, this podcast is a must.

Everything Else

Google Home Nest

In this household we are suckers for Google Home. Sorry, we can’t help it. We recently got a Google Home Nest for the kitchen and it is a game changer. It’s great for playing music, looking up recipes, and watching videos. I really love having this in the kitchen.

Alison Roman

Food posts on Instagram is not for everyone, but it is very much for me. I started following Allison on Instagram after hearing about her on the Jam Session podcast. Since then, I’ve been a big fan of her and even bought her two cookbooks. I love her approach to cooking and hosting, which is that it’s not going to be perfect and that food is to be enjoyed.

I’ve been hearing about Lightroom for years, but never really explored it. I finally tried it out early this year, and I love it! It’s an easy way to make photos look nicer. If you can believe it, I’d been using PowerPoint for years to lighten and edit photos. I graduated from that this year, and I think my photos have benefited from it.

What I’ve been watching this week – November 12

Taskmaster The 9th season of my favourite show has come to an end. The cast this season was perfection. They had incredible chemistry together, which made the studio segments really fun to watch. This charm had been sort of missing the last few seasons, so […]

What I’ve been watching this week – September 9

Taskmaster Series 9 The new season of Taskmaster has just begun! I know I keep saying this, but Taskmaster is truly the best and funniest show I’ve ever seen. Sure, I have the tendency to be hyperbolic, but I mean it! This new season is […]

Love Island Series 5

The latest series of Love Island may have recently ended in its native UK, but it has just arrived to my favourite streaming service, hayu. After a fun month of watching the US version of the show, I am all in. I really like the first few episodes of every season where everyone is getting to know each others and the relationship dynamics are constantly shifting.

I’ve heard that this season is one of the best ones, so I’m excited to get into it!

Taskmaster Series 5

The new series starts in just a few weeks, and watching this show always puts me in a good mood. We’ve been putting on episodes of series 5 each night and I forgot how good this season is. The cast is so, so funny and every episode makes me laugh so hard.

Southern Charm Season 2

I’m still waiting to fall in love with Southern Charm, but it’s still just not happening. The drama that’s happening is not really that fun, it’s just kind of depressing. There are a couple cast members I really like – Cameran and Landon, and it doesn’t make sense to me why they’re hanging out with any of the other. Thomas and Whitney give me the creeps, and Kathryn just makes me very sad. Anyway, I’m going to keep watching because who knows why, I just am okay.

Check out my Bachelor in Paradise podcasts here.

What I’ve been watching this week – July 30

Love Island US I’ve been having a great time watching Love Island US. It has really surpassed any expectations I had for the show. Which were very few. I’m sorry! I was skeptical that CBS wouldn’t completely screw up a show that worked so well. […]

What I’ve been watching this week – July 23

Love Island US I went into the US version of Love Island admittedly skeptical. What’s popular in the UK doesn’t always translate well to the other side of the Atlantic. So far, I am loving it. The show is 10 episodes into its 4 week […]

2018 Favourites

2018 Favourites

2018 has been an interesting year to say the least, but here are a few of my favourite things that I’ve discovered this year.

Boxycharm – I’ve loved subscription boxes since they’ve been around. I love getting mail, and I love trying out makeup so they’re really the perfect combo. I’ve taken some time away from subscription boxes because of the Canadian dollar not being super strong, so they were getting expensive and I wasn’t super satisfied with the products I was receiving. I had been wanting to try out Boxycharm for a while because you received 5 full-sized products. It is more expensive than your usual beauty boxes, at $21 USD a month. I received the box for 4 months, and I was very satisfied with these boxes. I’ve found a couple of new holy grails. There were a few misses in the boxes, but overall I was very happy with it. I only stopped because I needed to take a break from receiving makeup and paying for it. If there are any boxes in the future that are really appealing to me I will definitely sign up again. Check out what I got in my boxes here, and sign up for Boxycharm here.

Yoga With Adriene – Every year one of my resolutions isn’t to do more yoga. I used to go to classes but they weren’t my favourite and it was hard to fit into my schedule. While searching for some yoga videos on YouTube early last year, I came across Adriene. I love her videos because she makes you feel very comfortable with what you’re doing whether you’re a beginner, an expert, or somewhere in between. There are endless options for the type of flow you feel like doing that day, how much time you have, the time of day it is, the part of your body you want to target, and anything else you can think of. I fell off the wagon in the summer, but I’ve been able to get back on in the late fall, and I hope to continue!

Gritty – right before the new NHL season started, the Philadelphia Flyers introduced – nay – UNLEASHED their new mascot onto us. Since then Gritty has taken the world by storm with his dance moves and interviews. Nothing has brought us together in 2018 quite like loving Gritty.

Thankful for my city (and all the giant loons)

Sports? With Katie Nolan – After her last podcast and show, Garbage Time, ended I felt a hole in my heart. I’m so glad Katie came back to the radio waves with her new podcast. It’s still the perfect mixture of feminist rants, pop culture, and of course sports. I think I actually like it better than Garbage Time. Her co-host/bff Ashley brings a lot to the show and I look forward to listening to the podcast each week.

Matcha – I never even used to enjoy drinking hot beverages and now I’m over here loving MATCHA????? I really didn’t think I was even going to like matcha, but I figured I should try it. I really love its creamy texture, but I do feel like I need to add juuuust a little sugar.

First Aid Beauty – I had tried one or two products from First Aid Beauty last year, but it wasn’t until this year I became a full convert. They offer quite a few sets, so it’s a good way to try out a bunch of products at once. Their skincare line is super gentle. I’ve had problematic skin this year and have been dealing with issues, like dryness, that I’ve never had before. The face cleanser has become a staple in my skincare routine, I’ve fallen head-over-heels for the coconut smoothie primer, and the red clay cleanser is a life-saver when I have breakouts.

Taskmaster – A few years ago a friend turned me on to British panel shows. This year Lauren introduced me to what was not only my favourite show of 2018 but is now my favourite show EVER – Taskmaster. The premise is a fun one – the Taskmaster’s assistant gets 5 comedians all to do some tasks, and they all get together to watch what each of them has done, then the Taskmaster judges the tasks and awards points. It’s the cleverest show I have ever seen, and it is incredibly funny. 15/10 would recommend.

Dennis the Prescott – A boss of mine suggested Dennis’ Instagram account to me and I immediately fell in love with the combination of delicious-looking food and an interesting photographic composition theme. I even bought my boyfriend his cookbook, Eat Delicious, for Christmas (even though it’s really for me).

The Royal Wedding – I cannot help it, I’ve always loved the pomp and circumstance of the Royal Family. I had been very excited about the Royal Wedding of Harry and Meghan since they announced their engagement late last year. My mom and I woke up very early to watch it live. It is just a very fun memory we have together, and it’s always cool to feel like everyone in the world is doing something at once.

Reina del Caribe V1 Palette by Alamar Cosmetics – This was my favourite eyeshadow palette of 2018. It was the reason I got my first Boxycharm. I am so drawn to the bright, bold colours in this palette. The formula of the shadows is pigmented but not hard to work with, and the shimmers are unlike anything I’ve tried. This year had many ‘neutral with one pop of colour’ palettes release, and this one really felt like a breath of fresh air. Even though it’s bold, it’s still very wearable.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara – This was one of the most talked about books of 2018, with good reason. The author, Michelle McNamara, died suddenly in her sleep while halfway done this book. It was finished by her widow, Patton Oswalt, and crime journalists Paul Haynes and Billy Jensen. The book follows Michelle’s obsessive search for the Golden State Killer. The book is haunting and unsettling, but incredibly brilliant and gripping. In a twist of fate, soon after the book was released, the Golden State Killer was caught. This is a must-read for true crime lovers, but I’m sure they’ve all read this already.

I hope you enjoyed my favourites from this year, what are yours?

What I’ve been watching this week – October 29

I’ve been watching the usual stuff lately. All of those were good this week, per usual. Quite a few shows are coming to an end in the coming weeks – looking at you, AYTO and GBBO. Another one of my favourite shows is coming to […]
